RHEMA: G4487, rhēma, hray'-mah
From G4483; an utterance (individually, collectively or specifically); by implication a matter or topic (especially of narration, command or dispute); with a negative naught whatever: - + evil, + nothing, saying, word.
There are two different Greek words that have been translated as “word” in the English Bible. The first word translated as “word” in Greek is the word LOGOS. The Apostle John tells us that LOGOS is the creative spoken WORD OF GOD. JESUS CHRIST IS LOGOS !
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word (logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The second word translated as “word” is the Greek word RHEMA. Rhema is a description of when God speaks directly to our individual spirit. Communicating with God is what every Christian should be striving for because that is why we were created. We were created to fellowship with God. The best description of “rhema” I have found is by Watchman Nee in his teaching about “The Glorious Church.”
We will always treasure the fact that the Lord still speaks today. He not only spoke in the Scriptures, He not only spoke to Paul and John, He is also speaking to us today. The word of the Lord has never ceased. Whenever someone who is working for the Lord stands up to speak for Him, he must expect the rhema. If the Lord does not speak to us today, we are really failures. How many times have we preached, yet the Lord did not speak a word? It is not that there was something wrong with the message, but it was all the general word of the Lord; there was no rhema in it. The problem with the church today is that it lacks the living word of the Lord; instead there are only dead doctrines. There is a real shortage of direct communication from God. There is only a passing on of man's preaching. It is pitiful that so many people have died under good doctrines! May God have mercy upon us and give us rhema. May He speak personally and directly to us today. Only when we have rhema can we move ahead and have the living water to supply to others. What we need is rhema. Watchman Nee, The Glorious Church.
I strongly encourage everybody to read “The Glorious Church by Watchman Nee. God has BIG PLANS FOR HIS CHURCH!
God speaking PERSONALLY to me is my quest in life and it should be every Christian’s greatest desire.
This is why we spend hours, days, and even years meditating on, and memorizing, the Logos, so that we can receive God’s rhema Word. We want, and need, a personal Word from God.
Psa 119:71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
Psa 119:72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.
Psa 119:73 JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.
Psa 119:74 They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.
This is what King David was talking about. Although we suffer affliction and persecution in this life, if we hear personally from God, it is more than worth it. When we hear personally from God, we have the mind of Christ. The “rhema” transforms us more and more into HIS image.
This is why we must spend time in the Logos. If we are dealing with a problem, and we seek the LOGOS of God that addresses that problem, then we exponentially increase our chances of receiving a PERSONAL Word (RHEMA) from God that will SOLVE the problem.
It is the difference between somebody who is actively seeking gold, or silver, or precious stones, as opposed to somebody who accidently trips over the Hope Diamond while walking in the park. I suppose the later could happen every once in a great while, but the chances of actually finding a treasure is greatly increased if you are actively searching for a treasure. The same principal applies to the Word of God.
Deu 4:29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
Deu 4:30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;
Deu 4:31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
A rhema Word, your personal Word from God, is far more precious than silver and gold because it will be yours for all eternity!
Pro 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
Pro 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
How does it work? First, when we are dealing with a problem, perhaps it is a personal problem or perhaps it is the problem of somebody who is close to us, we ask God to help us solve the problem. Then we search in our e-sword or our Bible for 2 or 3 Bible verses from God’s Word (Logos) that deal specifically with the problem (e-sword is easier).
Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
We write down the Bible verses on a card and read them OUT LOUD SEVEN TIMES before we go to sleep and read them OUT LOUD SEVEN TIMES after we wake up. We keep doing this until we have the verses memorized. Occasionally, while we are going about our daily business, a verse will pop into our head…WE SPEAK THEM OUT LOUD.
Eventually, maybe in a few days or perhaps in a few weeks, like a bolt of lightning out of a clear blue sky, God’s RHEMA will come. We will suddenly have a REVELATION, and it will perfectly address our problem. The rhema may come in a dream, or it may come when we are washing dishes, or it may come when we are praying in tongues, but when it comes, we will KNOW THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEM!
Also, be open because God often uses strange avenues and unexpected people to provide us with His answer. Perhaps we will receive an unexpected check in the mail, or an old friend will call us on the phone, or a stranger on the street will stop and talk to us. God likes to keep things interesting. He also wants us to know that HE IS OUR PROVIDER!
Start doing this regularly and you will begin to experience God REGULARLY answering your prayers and REGULARLY solving your problems. You will recognize that YOU ARE THE CHILD OF GOD! You will recognize that not only is God looking out for you now but He has been looking out for you… your entire lifetime.
I would be remiss if I did not also mention the importance of FASTING, when seeking a RHEMA Word directly from God. FASTING is basically how we emphasize the fact that WE are NOT capable of solving the problem, and that we are looking ONLY to God for the solution to our problem.
There are many books on the subject of fasting but it appears to me that there are three basic types of fasting in the Bible:
- A COMMON FAST is simply drinking ONLY water and not eating ANY food…that does NOT include drinking tea, coffee, cola, or juices. (I usually do this type of fast when I am seeking a Word [RHEMA] from the LORD). If you are addicted to caffeine, it is very difficult to fast more than a couple of days.
- A DANIEL FAST is when you drink water and eat simple foods…normally because you have responsibilities that prevent you from only praying and fasting. (ex. You are required to work while fasting).
- An ESTHER FAST is when you do not eat any food OR drink any water. Remember that Esther and the Jews were literally in a life or death situation. She only did this fast for three (3) days. I would avoid this type of fast unless I was in a life or death situation myself and time was very critical because if you do not eat any food and you do not drink any water for more than three days, you will probably die from the fast anyway.
If I did not have any experience fasting, I would start off slow. First, I would try fasting for twenty-four hours. Usually, I fast from 6 P.M. to 6 P.M. the next day. I avoid fasting when I am working unless I decide to start fasting at 6 P.M. on a Thursday night and then fast through to 6 P.M. on Sunday night; thereby, fasting three (3) days with only one (1) fast day while I am working on Friday.
The most I have personally fasted, drinking ONLY water, has been ten (10) days. Expect your dreams to be more vivid, and you may even have a vision. You should keep a notepad and pen close by to write down any revelation, dream, or vision that God may give you during this time of fasting. Also, it is very important that you spend time reading and meditating on the Word of God while you fast.
If you fast without praying and meditating on God’s Word, it is called “dieting”.
In Mark Twain’s autobiography he writes about being visited by the English writer Rudyard Kipling a few years before Mr. Kipling became famous for writing Kim and The Jungle Book. Mr. Kipling sailed across the Atlantic and probably traveled many days by horse or carriage in order to meet and talk for a few hours with a writer that he admired. Few people will do the things necessary to hear from the creator of heaven and earth.
There are certain protocols if you want to hear from God just like there are protocols to meet a king, a president, a governor, or even a mayor of a small town. We need to ask ourselves, “Am I really serious about hearing from God?”
Is receiving a personal RHEMA Word from God worth spending some time meditating on His Word and maybe even missing a few meals? Everybody must answer that question for themselves.
Joh 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words (RHEMA): ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
If you decide to seek for a personal Word from God and you begin communicating with Him, do not be surprised if people laugh at you, or mock you, or call you crazy because they did the same thing to Jesus and the prophets.
Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one.
